FAIRLY TRADED coffee
Chanchamyo is a Province, in the Central part of Peru. Some of the best coffee of Peru comes from this region.
Its not easy to get to Chanchamyo. From Lima, the capital city, you cross over the Andes in an 8 hour car trip to La Merced, the main city. But its worth every hour. About 100 miles East of La Merced, is a small town called Pichanaki. The Farmer Association of Pichanaki, is a specialty coffee producing association made up of about 500 farmers.
This region boasts excellent fertile ground with perfect coffee growing conditions.
The coffee of this valley has a classic Peru good body with Cacao flavour yet the hints of Nuty Syrup and Licorice which separate this coffee from that found at lower altitudes.
The varieties most common to the region are Caturra and Pache.
In total there are 314 members of whom 266 are male and 48 are female.
The relationship with producers is based on longevity, trust and respect.
Purchase price is set in advance depending on quality without paying no attention to the world trade price that
leaves producers with no security.
As a general rule with smallholdings, each producer harvests around 750kg – 1500kg a year depending on farm
size, the weather and the care each farmer has taken to manage their plot.
The coffee is washed, due to the spring waters. Later the parchment is patio dried. The cascarra is later used as fertilizer.
The coffee originates from farms that have not been contaminated with pesticides and phosphates.
